Why is the Netherlands the ideal spring destination?

Let’s be honest - the first thing that pops into everyone’s mind when they first think of the Netherlands is Amsterdam. Tall, narrow buildings on the canals, bikes everywhere, the famous coffee shops… yes, you know what I’m talking about! Amsterdam is an amazing city, there is absolutely no doubt about that! But there are so many other places in the Netherlands worth visiting that can just enhance your overall travel experience. Getting out of the crowds and the busy Amsetradam streets is just the bonus. Especially in spring.

Why? Well, you must have seen the colorful rivers of tulips that flood the whole country during the spring. You can find them in supermarkets, local flower markets and shops, on magnets, keychains, coffee cups… literally everywhere! No wonder the Netherlands is associated with tulips. Fun fact: Tulips actually originate from Central Asia, not the Netherlands. Anyways, back to the topic. If you take a short day trip from Amsterdam and head towards the south-western part of the country, you’ll experience something even better: tulip fields that cover the whole area, especially around the town Lisse. If Lisse doesn’t ring a bell, then how about Keukenhof?

Keukenhof is one of the largest gardens in Europe, with more than 7 million (yes, million!) flower bulbs planted every year. The gardens are open every year from the end of March until mid-May. In 2025, they will open their doors on 20th of March and close off the season on 11th of May. This is going to be their 76th season, how incredible is that?! Other than spring flowers, Keukenhof is also a nice location for sculptures and other works of art that make the visit even more special.

A tip from a local: A day trip to Keukenhof is certainly possible without an organised tour. All you have to do is jump on the train to Leiden and from there hop on the bus that goes directly to the gardens. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also cycle to the gardens, passing by the tulip fields in the surrounding area. And for those who want to have an experience of a lifetime, a helicopter ride is also an option!
